SAN ANTONIO -- The UTSA men's and women's tennis teams along with Rut Hockey spent time away from the court last Sunday by participating in the Rock the Cure 5K at the Alamodome.

The Roadrunners and Rut Hockey  took part in the 5000-meter walk with nearly 9,000 other participants to help promote awareness and raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. UTSA and Rut Hockey donated directly to help the cause of Meredith Slimp, an eight-year-old San Antonio native who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of three.

"It's a little bit of an eye-opener to see so many people there to help children with diabetes," Co-Founder Ryan Scott said. "It's a great cause. I'm glad we participated and were able to help out."

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is the worldwide leader in funding research to cure Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly and lasts a lifetime.

1st Annual Rut Hockey Showcase held in Stevens Point, WI

The 1st Annual “evening with Rut Hockey Executive - Ryan Scott”  for the Rut Hockey Flannel/Camo Party benefiting the Rut Hockey mission in growing hockey in North America, the event will be held on Friday, September 16, 2011  at The CABIN in Stevens Point, WI

The Plover, WI native was among the first executives that first began the idea of forming Rut Hockey.  Rut Hockey Based out of San Antonio, TX competes as a hockey team and plays in adult tournaments around North America to help grow the sport of hockey.  Rut Hockey's goal is to promote both Youth and Adult Hockey in South Texas and North America. They are proud of the success of instruction that they give to youth and adult hockey players enabling them to maximize their abilities and obtain the most enjoyment possible from the position and sport.

How Did Rut Hockey Begin?

Many people have asked the same question: Where did you all come up with such an idea?  Rut Hockey has many facets and is a collaboration from several key people.

This first idea was discussed in 2008 after an adult hockey league game in San Antonio, TX between Ryan Scott  and Rob Fauteux discussing putting a team together and competing in a Pond Hockey Tournament somewhere up north!

However, the original design was an idea that had been brewing in the mind of the most redneck of the hockey players, “Gutpile” AJ O’Connor.

According to AJ he had been searching the internet for several years trying to find a hunting camouflage hockey jersey.  He found several types of jerseys that had different forms of military camo but not a hunting camo.  In the summer months of 2009 the idea of going to Lake Placid NY for a pond hockey tournament was put on the table.   AJ now had a true reason to bring his camo hockey jersey concept to reality.

First of all we needed to pick a camo pattern.  AJ contacted all the major companies; Realtree, Mossy Oak, Kings Camo, even Under Armor and some other less known companies.   We seemed to get a lot of roadblocks from all the companies accept for Mossy Oak.   They were great.  They wanted to know more about our ideas and the tournament and they pointed us in the right direction.

We finally found a small company that could get us the quantity of camo that we needed in a material that would be suitable for a hockey jersey.  Now we just needed to find a company to build these jersey’s for us.  Rob found a company out of Minnesota called Tough Jerseys that specializes in hockey jerseys and we started bouncing ideas on what this jersey would exactly look like.

Most of the ideas were recorded up in the Penalty Box and Willies bar/restaturant in San Antonio one night after beer league.  AJ, Ryan and Rob starting going through ideas and making notes on a napkin.    AJ started spitting out names that would go on the back of the jerseys and Rob started making small drawings of what this jersey would look like…stripes, shoulder color etc…   After about 18 Labatt Blues we came up with a camo jersey in Mossy Oak Break Up with black shoulders and collar with bright orange striping.  Needless to say we were pretty excited and pretty tired after it was done.  I think we closed the bar down that night.

There were only a few minor items that had yet been decided.  What was the team going to be called?  What would the logo on the front be?  This actually took quite a bit of time.  Ryan was quite excited to get the website built so the team name became the first priority.   We wanted the name to be associated with deer so several names were suggested; “The Bucks” and “The Rut”.  After a day or two Ryan made an executive decision and ruthockey.com was born.  It was only a few weeks later that the jersey company sent us a logo used by a team in Minnesota that was an emblem of a charging buck.   It was perfect and so we adopted it as our own.

After getting all the specs, names, numbers and logos together we left everything in the hands of the jersey company.  We were told that they had more fun building our jerseys than any other.  The owner even had one built for himself and it currently hangs at his business on display for all to see.

The day the jerseys arrived by UPS it was like Christmas.  A lot has happened since then.  AJ’s initial idea had blossomed into an entity with its own energy.  Ryan took the lead on the website.  James Thomas headed up the merchandise.  Rob has been the project manager.  Its amazing that 2 years have gone by and there have been several new orders of hockey jerseys for kids and for new additions to the Rut Hockey team.  Several jerseys have been auctioned off or traded for.

Needless to say, we get great reactions from people everywhere we go.  The most common conversation goes like this:

“Where are you guys from?”

“We’re from San Antonio.”

And their response is priceless.

“Texas!!!???”

RYAN SCOTT LOOKS FORWARD TO MEETING EVERYONE ON FRIDAY AT THE CABIN! Please follow @Ruthockey and @scottysaves on twitter and please "LIKE" our Rut Hockey Facebook page.

Dayton, Ohio – Texas based adult recreational hockey team Rut Hockey has been named the winner of the Dayton Gems’ first ever Beer League Night, presented by Heidelberg Distributing Company, set for Saturday, January 7 inside the historic Hara Arena. This past June, the Gems asked recreational hockey teams from around the nation to submit their team names and logo to find the most innovative beer league name and logo in North America, nd after settling on six finalists, fans expressed their opinion by casting well over 5,000 votes to name Rut Hockey the winner.

“We would like to thank all of the teams that submitted their team name & logo for this contest. We had a tremendous response from dozens of teams from across North America and we are excited to name Rut Hockey our first annual winner,” said Gems President Joe Greene.

The Gems will now wear replica jerseys of Rut Hockey’s fan-favorite design during Dayton’s regular season matchup against division rival Fort Wayne Komets on January 7. The very unique jerseys and socks feature a hunting theme complete with a woodsman camouflage pattern accented with bright orange stripes.

In addition to wearing the team’s uniform, the Gems will invite Rut Hockey’s players to the game so they can participate in a special shootout against the MegaCity Hockey Club, a recreational team in Dayton, during the first intermission.

“This is an opportunity to not only honor the beer leagues of the country, but to also raise money for a charitable organization,” added Greene. “Our players will actually be wearing replicas of the camouflaged uniforms for the game, and I know they’ll have a lot of fun with it.

Rut Hockey will be given a VIP experience with the Gems on the night of the game, complete with an opportunity to sit on the team bench for warm-ups, a tour of the Gems locker room, and a meet and greet with our players and head coach after the game.

All of the game worn Rut Hockey jerseys worn by the Dayton Gems players will then be sold in an online auction the following week on DaytonGems.com, with a portion of the proceeds going to the charity of Rut Hockey’s choice.

Short for Realizing Unlimited Potential, Rut Hockey describes themselves as a tight knit group of amateur hockey players originally from all over the country that play together to help grow the sport of hockey in their community. Based out of San Antonio, TX they play in adult tournaments throughout North America.

For the fans, January 7 will feature many special promotions to honor the adult “beer league” hockey culture, including a Gems pint glass giveaway for the first 500 fans 18 and older through the gates, as well as Hara Arena beer specials.

Rut Hockey Race Car Driver Making News!

6/20/2011

Phil Malouf looked like he was driving through a parking lot Friday night when the green flag flew at Golden Sand Speedway Friday night. He timed the start of the 4 Cylinder Mod group Feature race with veteran dexterity and posted his first win of 2011 after notching fast time and a heat win, sweeping his class. Adam Eckes was nearly as fast, but did not make it through the pack in time to challenge. Scott Scholze, Dale Robinson and Austin McKeever had an exciting series of laps to finish off the top 5.

The Stock 4 Cylinder class brought enough cars to warrant a B main, where Rut Hockey Race Car Driver Dan Broton and Mike Wisniewski moved up into the feature. 18 small frame cars buzzed to the start of the 15 lap race, and 3 and 4 wide racing immediately followed. Frank Calabrese snaked through traffic and led at lap 10, finishing 1st despite a couple of hard charges by Steve Rozek, Joachim Mangen and Luccas Betro. Mangen and Betro knocked each other to the back of the pack in the last lap, Rozek posting 2nd. Josh Klopotek, John Engebretsen And Joseph Kempf completed the top 5.

Pure Stocks also brought a couple dozen rides and 18 vied for a feature win with fast qualifier Cale Marzofka lined up in the 5th slot after a lucky dice roll put him up toward the front. Ben Capek got a very good start and looked like he would cruise to an uncontested win until a puff of smoke signaled the end of his night on lap 13 and he angled into the pits. Brent Weiland inherited the lead, and the easy win ahead of Marzofka. Jake Capek, Mark Kalata and Kurt Guralski also filled out the top 5.

The Super Stock event drew nearly a dozen cars, with Ryan Hinner as fast qualifier. The Stevens Point local racer worked traffic from a 5th starting spot to challenge Brian Weinfurter by lap 10, but it was nearly 7 laps later when Hinner actually found the chance to pass, sliding by Weinfurter on the inside and driving off to a decisive win. John Zuch, Dwayne Davis, and Scott Hamel completed the top 5. The new ride for Hinner fits him, and he thanked the Reffner family for the help and the fast car.

Memorial day racing began with the partnership with the South Wood County Humane Society and will end with the Element Mobile Series on Monday with a 100 lap Late Model event, Pure Stocks, And Wisconsin Sport Trucks. 2 Man Cruisers will cap off the holiday race. Gates open at 11, qualifying at 1:15, racing at 3.
